Kindergarten Registration-Screening Information Page

The Brookings School District will hold kindergarten screening for the 2024/2025 school year on February 5, 6 and 7. Call 696-4724 with any questions.

The Brookings School District offers kindergarten screening for any child who will be 5 years old by September 1st of the year they would begin school.

Kindergarten Screening is held at each K-3 center (Dakota Prairie, Hillcrest, and Medary) in the Spring and is by appointment only. The location of your appointment is based on the current K-3 school boundaries. The screening process will take approximately one hour. Screening at a school does not guarantee attendance at that school for the student's kindergarten year.

Items required for kindergarten screening:

  • certified birth certificate

  • current immunization records

  • proof of residence

  • custody papers (if there is a custody agreement)

Incoming kindergarten students will need to meet state immunization requirements in order to attend school. We ask that you call or message your child’s primary care provider now, and ask if your child’s immunizations are up to date. This way you will have time to set up an appointment for additional immunizations, if necessary.

Local immunization providers:

  • Avera Medical Group Brookings (605) 697-9500

  • Brookings Community Health (605) 688-5802

  • Sanford Health Brookings Clinic (605) 697-1900

The Brookings School District offers all day, every day kindergarten to students. However, during the screening process you will have the opportunity to choose between the Brookings School District Kindergarten and the SDSU Kindergarten, which is limited to 22 students. Should the SDSU kindergarten program exceed the maximum number of requests, a lottery drawing will be held.
