🐾 September Hometown Legacy | Once a Bobcat, always a Bobcat!
This month, we're highlighting two Brookings High School graduates who have returned to BSD to help make a difference for the next generation.
Lynsey Magnus, BHS Class of 2009, serves as an Instructional Assistant at Dakota Prairie Elementary and Assistant Girls' Soccer Coach.
Zach Thomas, BHS Class of 2010, serves as Principal at Brookings High School.
Both share a special connection to the district they grew up in and the educators who helped shape their experiences. Now, they're continuing that legacy as members of the BSD team.
Take a look at their September Hometown Legacy features to learn more about their Bobcat roots and what brought them full circle.

Today is National IT Professionals Day!
We're celebrating the Brookings School District IT Department and the work they do each day to keep technology running across our schools!
Our four-person IT team manages more than 4,900 devices, supports approximately 3,400 students and nearly 500 staff members, and closed 1,435 technology support tickets last year. Together, they have an incredible 58 years of service with the Brookings School District!
Thank you, Grant Sunne, Travis Vlaminck, Jason Smidt, and Adam Vaux, for everything you do to keep our schools connected! ❤️🖤

The Brookings Area United Way is encouraging our community to spread messages of hope, connection and support through the 2nd Annual Chalk The Walk Initiative. Its a simple way to help create a community where people feel seen, supported and connected. Our Knights & Squires were out helping adding positive messages to our walkways around Camelot! #chalkthewalk2026

🇺🇸 9.11 — Patriot’s Day
Camelot came together for a special assembly organized by the Brookings Fire Department and led by BFD Chaplain Tim Rynearson as we honored the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001.
The message was clear: Never Forget. And perhaps just as importantly, we were reminded that it doesn’t take a tragedy for a community to come together, support one another, and stand united.
A heartfelt thank you to the Brookings Fire Department, VFW, Chief Troy Hughes, our student readers, our parent speaker, and former SDSU Football Coach Stig for sharing their time, stories, and messages with our school.
And a special shout-out to Mr. Bakken for beautifully performing our National Anthem and America (My Country, ’Tis of Thee). 🇺🇸
Never Forget. Always Remember. Always United.

Breakfast with Badges is tomorrow! 🚒🚔🚑
Bobcat families, join us tomorrow morning from 7:30–8:05 AM in the Camelot cafeteria for our first Breakfast with Badges of the 2026–2027 school year!
We're excited to welcome local law enforcement, members of the Brookings Fire Department, and the Emergency Medical Services from Brookings Health System to our school for a morning of connection with our learners.
Our goal is simple: help see our local heroes as approachable, caring members of our community, and give our first responders a chance to know the kids they serve beyond emergency calls. It's about building trust and reminding every Bobcat that they're supported both inside and outside our school walls.
This event occurs every second Tuesday of the month from 7:30-8:05!

A new musical journey begins at Camelot! 🎻 🎶
This week, we welcomed our fourth-grade learners and families to our Orchestra Open House!
At Camelot, fourth grade is an exciting milestone because learners have the opportunity to join Orchestra for the very first time! From learning about instruments to taking those first steps into becoming part of an ensemble, we love seeing our Bobcats begin their musical journey. 🎼✨
A huge shoutout to Mr. Bakken, Mrs. Hummel, and the entire crew that helped make both open house events run so smoothly and for creating such an exciting experience for our learners and families!
We can't wait to hear all the incredible music our newest musicians will create this year! ❤️🖤

🐾 The Bobcat Way in action!
Our 5th graders have officially completed their first full week at Camelot, and they’re already showing us what it means to be active learners and live the Bobcat Way!
This week, learners put their creativity, collaboration, problem-solving, and perseverance to work as they designed and built bridges out of popsicle sticks. Then came the real test—how much weight could their structures hold?
Through hands-on learning, these learners were able to build, test, learn from challenges, and try again while working together toward a common goal.
What a great start to the year! We can’t wait to see how our 5th graders continue to learn, grow, collaborate, and lead the Bobcat Way! 🐾

Our 4th graders have officially finished their first full week at Camelot, and what a great week it has been!
They’ve been busy exploring the building, making new friends, learning new routines, meeting some of our amazing staff, and, of course, learning lots along the way. They even got to meet our talented Orchestra teachers!
We’re so proud of how our 4th graders have jumped into this new adventure. We can’t wait to see what this year brings!
Welcome to Camelot, 4th grade!
