BEST award winner Deb Ulvestad with superintendent Summer Schultz holding award certificate.

Deb Ulvestad, Volunteer & Retired Brookings High School Secretary

Deb Ulvestad is exceptionally deserving of the B.E.S.T. Award for her continued dedication and service to the Brookings School District. Although retired from Brookings High School, Deb’s commitment to students, staff, and families has never wavered. When staffing gaps arose, she willingly stepped back in to provide critical support, demonstrating her deep care for the district and its people. Deb has been an invaluable asset across both the high school and middle school during times of need. Her extensive knowledge of office systems and the registration process brought stability, accuracy, and reassurance during a high-stakes transition at the high school, while her support at the middle school ensured the office continued to run smoothly while a secretary was out. Deb consistently arrives early, seeks out additional responsibilities, and approaches every task with professionalism, patience, and attention to detail. Her calm presence and proactive problem-solving have been deeply appreciated by staff. What truly sets Deb apart is her servant leadership. She gives her time and expertise selflessly, not because she has to, but because she genuinely cares about the success of the district. Her quiet leadership, reliability, and willingness to step in wherever needed embody the spirit of the B.E.S.T. Award. Deb’s continued service has made a meaningful difference during a critical time, and we are incredibly grateful for the lasting impact she continues to make.

Christopher Gross, BEST award winner standing with superintendent Summer Schultz holding award certificate.

Christopher Gross, Sub Bus Driver

I would like to nominate Christopher Gross for the B.E.S.T. Award in recognition of his outstanding professionalism and calm demeanor during the gymnastics team trip to Pierre. Christopher demonstrated exceptional care and responsibility while driving in extremely hazardous conditions. On the way to Pierre, the team encountered blizzard conditions, and on the return trip, freezing rain created dangerous, icy road surfaces. Despite these challenges, Christopher remained calm, focused, and made safety his top priority. He had to stop multiple times to clear ice from the windshield in order to maintain visibility and ensure the safety of everyone in the vehicle. In addition to his safe and cautious driving, Christopher went above and beyond by helping load and unload equipment. The trip took many more hours than normal due to weather and road conditions, yet he remained patient, positive, and committed throughout the entire journey. Christopher’s actions reflect the true spirit of the B.E.S.T. Award through his composure, responsibility, and genuine concern for the safety and well-being of students and staff.
