Brookings High School alumnus Scott Jorgenson (Class of 2007) has taken his passion for learning, history, and people on a journey that has led him all the way to Washington, D.C. Today, he serves as Counsel for the United States Senate Judiciary Committee, where he organizes congressional hearings, helps craft legislation, and advises the Senator he works for on issues in his policy portfolio.

Scott’s path to the nation’s capital has been anything but linear. After graduating from BHS, he attended the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, where he majored in History and Secondary Social Sciences Education while competing as a member of the track and field team. Following graduation, his love for culture and exploration took him abroad to Spain, where he spent two years teaching in bilingual public schools.

When he returned to the U.S., Scott began teaching World and U.S. History at Elkhorn South High School in Omaha, Nebraska, while also coaching track and field. “I loved my time as a teacher and would like to teach in some form again in the future,” he shared. But his curiosity and passion for “doing social studies” in a new way inspired him to pursue law school at the University of Virginia, where he earned his J.D. That decision ultimately led him to the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, where he now serves in his current role.

When asked about his favorite Bobcat memories, Scott’s answer was simple: the people. From winning state soccer and ESD track titles to the small, everyday moments spent with friends, classmates, and teachers, he values the connections that made his time at BHS so meaningful.

He also looks back with pride on the variety of activities he pursued during high school such as sports, theater, choir, debate, and more. “Each activity challenged me in a different way, let me pursue a different interest, and exposed me to a wider group of friends, classmates, and teachers. It enriched my high school experience and made me a more rounded person.”

For today’s Bobcats, his advice is to lean into those opportunities:

“We are the products of our life experiences and the lessons they teach us, so be curious. High school presents you with opportunities to take different classes, try a variety of activities, and meet new and interesting people. They can all help you grow and develop into a person that makes a positive difference in the world. Let them.”

From the classroom to Congress, Scott Jorgenson’s story is a reminder of the power of curiosity, connection, and lifelong learning.

Once a Bobcat, always a Bobcat. 🐾
