Chris Gruenhagen, principal of Medary Elementary School, has been named the 2026 Community Leader Award recipient by the South Dakota Association of Elementary School Principals (SDAESP).
The Community Leader Award recognizes school leaders who demonstrate exceptional commitment to building strong relationships between schools and their surrounding communities. Mr. Gruenhagen was selected for his extensive work connecting students, families, and community partners throughout Brookings.
In his role at Medary Elementary, Mr. Gruenhagen has fostered meaningful partnerships with local organizations, youth athletics programs, service groups, and South Dakota State University. His leadership has helped strengthen collaboration between the school and the broader community while supporting student learning and engagement.
His efforts have made a lasting impact on both Medary Elementary and the greater Brookings community, reflecting a strong commitment to service, collaboration, and educational excellence.
