Brookings High School musicians showcased their talents at the 2026 South Dakota All-State Chorus and Orchestra, held October 30-31 in Rapid City. A total of 26 BHS students were selected to participate, with five additional students recognized as alternates.
Selection for these ensembles reflects months of preparation and dedication. Orchestra students began preparing in May for a rigorous audition process in October, while choir students participated in weekly rehearsals, including a full-day practice at South Dakota State University alongside students from across the state.
During their trip, students visited several South Dakota landmarks, including the Dignity statue, Wall Drug, and Mount Rushmore, where choir members had the opportunity to perform the National Anthem.
Once in Rapid City, students participated in two days of rehearsals under the direction of accomplished guest conductors. The All-State Orchestra worked with Jennifer Drake, conductor of the Boise Philharmonic Youth Orchestra and Opera Idaho, while the All-State Chorus rehearsed under Dr. Morgan Luttig from the University of Alabama. The event concluded with the All-State Concert on Saturday, October 31.
Superintendent Receives Two Music Education Honors
The All-State weekend also brought special recognition for Brookings School District Superintendent Dr. Summer Schultz, who received the South Dakota Music Education Association (SDMEA) Distinguished Administrator Award in recognition of her commitment to music education.
Nominated by the District's band directors and selected by the SDMEA board, Dr. Schultz was recognized at the association's awards reception on October 30 and during the All-State Concert on October 31.
Earlier in the month, Dr. Schultz also received the 2026 Youth in Music Outstanding Administrator Award on October 10 at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, where the BHS marching band performed alongside competitive marching bands from across the region.
“I am grateful for this recognition, but the credit for our music programs' success belongs to our directors, students, and the families who support them,” Schultz said.
