The Brookings School District announces that Keli Books has resigned from her position on the Brookings School Board, effective immediately.

In her formal letter of resignation, Books shared that her family is preparing for a transition related to a professional opportunity outside of Brookings and expressed gratitude for the chance to serve.

“It has been an honor to serve this district, and we have accomplished so much together,” Books wrote. “Our family has been blessed by Brookings. Our daughters have flourished, supported by exceptional teachers, coaches, mentors, and friends. Brookings will always hold a special place in our hearts.”

During her tenure, Books played a leading role in several major district initiatives, including the passage of the $32.4 million bond in 2022, which funded the construction of the new Hillcrest Elementary School and the renovation and expansion of Medary Elementary.

Books also helped advance the Brookings Early Child Care Collaborative, an initiative designed to support working families, strengthen the local workforce, and expand access to high-quality early learning opportunities.

In her letter, Books shared two recommendations for the district’s continued progress:

“First, I hope the Board will explore a bond to comprehensively remodel Brookings High School. This facility deserves investment worthy of our students and teachers, and as the community has demonstrated in the past, Brookings will rise to support education when a clear, responsible vision is presented.

Second, I urge the Board to make a substantial, sustainable, and long-term investment in early childhood. Research proves that high-quality early learning strengthens school readiness, enhances long-term academic and social outcomes, and supports workforce stability for families.”

Superintendent Dr. Summer Schultz said, “Keli has been a thoughtful, forward-looking leader for our district. Her commitment to facilities planning and early childhood expansion reflects a deep understanding of what strengthens both students and the community.”

School Board President Debra DeBates added, “Keli has been a valued Board member. Her dedication and commitment to the students and staff of our district were always evident. Keli served on the finance committee and the facilities committee at a very demanding time as the district built our two new elementary schools. She was a powerful advocate for the early childhood centers. We appreciate her leadership and service, and we wish her the best as she transitions to a new position and a new community.”

Books has accepted the position of Vice President for Advancement at the University of Nebraska Foundation, where she will serve the University of Nebraska at Kearney (UNK). In this new role, she will partner with university leadership, faculty, and donors to strengthen philanthropic support and advance initiatives that impact students and communities across Nebraska. She will begin her appointment in early 2026.

In accordance with Board Policy BBE and state law (SDCL 13-8-24), the Brookings School Board will move forward with the process to fill the vacancy created by Books’ departure.
